EZX kit Mappings

Post by The_B »

Just in case someone stumbles upon this thread in search for EZX mappings:

I mailed my mappings to Ralph and they are in the jamstix302_RC6 update.
You will find mappings for all EZX and the NY kits (for EZDrummer and Superior 2.0) in the Toontrack folder.

You might have to look at your jamstix3.ini for ClosedHatSet and CymbalChoke settings.

If you want to adapt the mappings to your needs the also included .xls file will make your life easier ;-)

Thank you Ralph!!!

Peace,
B.

EZX kit Mappings

Post by Paul_M »

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but I just purchased Jamstix3 XL and was looking in the Toontrack folder for the Latin Percussion Kit but can't seem to find it. I searched through the forums and found an old post that mentions its existence: "Jamstix 1.8 will come with mappings for EZDrummer Core, Vintage Rock and DFH. Furthermore, a cool mapping for the EZX Latin Percussion is also included. " Question: where can I find this kit?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I guess this is historically, there maybe was a mapping back in version 1.8...
I don't know, since I started with version 3.

For version 3 I did all the Toontrack mappings and since I have don't have the Jamcussion expansion and a mapping from percussion to drums is not a mapping that can suite all/most situations, I did not make one...

So if I think, mapping the Kick and Snare to different articulations of the Cajon is cool, you could think that is just mad. And depending on the song you work on, you would be very right with that ;-)

I guess the easiest and best way to do percussion with Jamstix is to get the Jamcussion pack, since you get 3 percussionists and an extra module for just that. And I further guess, that the samples contained in there are at least equal in quality than the mentioned Toontrack EZX.

If you really need some extra sounds from the Toontrack EZX the easiest way would be to generate the MIDI data from Jamstix and feed that directly to Easydrummer with the EZX loaded, doing the mapping by moving the notes (if necessary).

Since we just got another free update from Rayzoon and I think that is a great service, I guess I will get the Jamcussion Expansion just to have a look at it. If a mapping make sense there, I'll do it...

Ok, got Jamcussion. One mapping for the Toontrack Latin Percussion EZX is in the delivered presets.

There are quite some possibilities to map things there...
Since the mapping depends heavily on the song and what fits in there, presets would not make sense and would not save any time.

If you look for fast preset style percussion use the Toontrack MIDI.
If you want to use the full potential of Jamstix, learn how to map, it is not that complicated after the first hurdles. The manual is a bit brief about that, but contains all important info.

A few pointers how to map things easily:

- You have got a pdf from Toontrack with all note/sound relations. Look for folder EZX_Percussion and EZX-Keys.pdf

- If you own Superior Drummer, you can load the kit there and if you rightclick one drum, you get the note for any articulation in the bottom right corner. That note is what Jamstix needs to know in order to trigger the sound you want.

- Creating a excel sheet helps a lot. Do a search for ToontrackMappings.xls in your Jamstix folder to see how I did that.

If there is a need for a step by step workflow with pictures, I can do that.

Hi The_B,

Thank you for your replies. Before posting my initial question I did find the pdf files for the EZX Latin Percussion mappings and also your xls file.

I know that since I'm just beginning with Jamstix that I'll have a lot more questions. I really appreciate your tips and offer of assistance :)

I'm using Jamstix with Cantabile Solo. I haven't gotten into doing a lot of recording yet, mostly just playing for personal enjoyment. I've been looking for a drummer VSTi that I could learn easily and use with a minimum of actual programming (I'm an old-timer who has been using drum machines since they first came on the scene - I'm talking mid 1960's) and have been pretty much frustrated with the likes of EZDrummer and Session Drummer for live playing as they seem to be better suited for use with DAWs. With Jamstix, I think I've finally found it :D !!

Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul,

no problem, you're welcome.

As you can see at the beginning of this thread, I made quite a journey myself at the beginning. Once you get an overview it gets a lot easier.

Have a lot of work right now, but as soon as I have some spare time, I will do a PDF with screenshots, so you can jump right in there.

When you did a lot of work with drum machines back in the day, you can use everything you learned about drums and MIDI here. Where you had a trigger and a sound back then, you have a drumslot and a sound now. The only added thing is that you have several articulations for each drumslot now.

Will get the PFD together the next couple of days...

Thanks B.

No need to rush with the pdf - I still have a lot to explore before I get to that point.

I've also just discovered that I have the capability to set up my music system to run in 64 bit mode but just didn't realize it, so I'm considering biting the bullet and doing a complete re-build. I'll need to mix & match components & OS's from two other systems - something I've been doing as long as I've had computers, but still no small task.

Regards,
Paul

@The_B

Just want to say a big thanks for doing the EZdrummer kit mappings. Instant gratification since I just bought EZdrummer and got it drumming with (new) style in 2 minutes.

Any chance you've mapped any of the newer EZX-kits like 'The Classic' and 'Americana'? :)

Have not tried the 3.5 version yet, but as I see it, you no longer need a special mapping anymore. Since I have lots of old songs using Jamstix I'm a bit shy to do the update without proper backup...

As I read it, the new version routes midi directly to a virtual instrument, so i.e. for Cubase, the normal drum map should do the job.
You can get these directly from Toontrack if you click on "Downloads" when you are logged in, "Extra Downloads" , "EZDrummer", "Hoststuff", "Cubase", "DrumMaps".
I assume you find similar for other hosts.

Have you done the update yet? Could you confirm wether the new version is a separate install and the old still available? Would speed things up for me, I could have a look at it faster.

Peace,
B.
