I never really understood what it did. What has the new engine done to remove the need for it? Just curious.

Do you mean the velocity scaling? It's just a feature that was hardly used and added unnecessary complexity to the JS2 engine. If alternate scaling is needed at all, it can be achieved through Max/Min Vol. in the kit editor as well as velocity mapping.

While on the subject of velocity, will Jamstix 3 have more velocity layers per kit piece than JS2 ?
Its just that i've been using the brush sounds quite a bit lately ( in JS2 ) and find the hats & snare don't seem to have a lot of velocity layers and on the snare in particular seems to jump in level quite a bit between layers.
Or is there something i'm missing in the setup/options that would fix this ?

The JS3 sounds have anywhere from 4 to 9 velocity layers with up to 6 alternate samples per layer. This has proven to be a good compromise between realism and kit size. The BonzoPak architecture is a good example of what the JS3 kit is aimed at.
The brush kit from the XL Pak is not up to the same standards as BonzoPak or JS3 stock kit. We will have a new brush kit either in JS3 or in a new JazzPak later on.
The volume differences in layers are natural. That's why drums are almost always going through a compressor. JS2/3 gives you an alternative with the velocity mapping in the kit editor. If you use the 'Expanded' mode, you will get higher levels on the lower layers. You can also experiment with raising the 'Min' knob below the mapping instead.

Hi Ralph, thanks for the detailed response.
"hands can be assigned tools (drumstick, mallet, brush, hot-rod), which also allows mix-&-match "
Does this mean we will be able to choose weather the new JS3 standard kit is played with either sticks, mallets, brushes or hot-rods ?
This would be a great feature, especially since the new stock kit has more velocity layers as you said above.
Cheers
This is good news.Ralph [RZ] wrote:The JS3 sounds have anywhere from 4 to 9 velocity layers with up to 6 alternate samples per layer. This has proven to be a good compromise between realism and kit size. The BonzoPak architecture is a good example of what the JS3 kit is aimed at.
I found this in your 1st post on the JS3 information thread.Ralph [RZ] wrote: The brush kit from the XL Pak is not up to the same standards as BonzoPak or JS3 stock kit. We will have a new brush kit either in JS3 or in a new JazzPak later on.

This is a handy feature for some applications, but if you are working on accoustic material and want as wide a dynamic range as possible, compressing the drums or bringing the lower velocity layers up in volume isn't always desirable.Ralph [RZ] wrote: The volume differences in layers are natural. Just tried it to try and help with a problem I'm having in Reaper. No change.Still slow saving and opening states.
Initial points.GUI is too large on my 17" monitor @1024(Some people will struggle on lap tops even more).
Bar editor icons are vague and not as good as JS2.
