sloppy drummer feel

Post by colorado_57 »

I mainly record folk and rock. I try to get a "live" jam feel when i record. Having really 'tight" drums makes the whole thing feel a little mechanical and weakens the illusion. One of the reasons i love jamstix is the brain improvising fills etc. but I really don't have a good sense of using the feel aspects in the groove.

I usually use Charlie.

So you got:

Pocket
Timing Vary
Power Vary
Snare Vary
Hihat Vary

Then over in the song you can vary timing and shuffle in each part or in the song as a whole. (how do timing in the brain and in the song interact?)

I know you can also do stuff with midi and audio jam but that is beyond me.

I play around with the settings but really don't know what I'm doing. I'm just randomly turning stuff.

So how do you best simulate a "loose' drummer banging away in your garage? :D Another way to put it is having a simulated Steve Gadd playing on my stuff sounds a little ridiculous. The guys I play with live are not any where near that level of quality and professionalism (and neither am I).

I guess I'm trying to develop your typical local mediocre drummer who is sloppy but groovy and has flashes of brillance after a few beers model.  :!: Come on, you know this guy.

Thanks

Timing of the song or part makes the drums push or lay back without changing the timing between notes. The brain timing settings affect the latter and are what you need.

Just use 'Timing Vary'. At high levels it will become very sloppy. I'd also give it a decent pocket (almost all the way to the right) .
