To me one of the most important things is to know what is going on inside the bars and there is still a small area in the lower left section of the GUI. That still means much scrolling and clicking.

That's my point. Remove the huge borders around each section and there would be enough room for the bars to stretch right across the GUI - maybe even as many as 36 bars. At a stroke, Jamstix becomes easier to use and understand. This is just one example where a tiny change would greatly improve Jamstix.

I didn't find JS1 or 2's gui's (or the workflow...) particularly intuitive, although there are things that I like about both of them once you get used to working it.
I appreciate the amount of variables for any one JS style/fill/groove and the difficulties in presenting them to the user in an organised, function manner.
My 2 cents:
Across the top, I'd order the context buttons - kit, song, mixer, options (options last because I have no idea what's going to be in there!) because I'd work left -> right - set up the kit, get the song arranged, then fine tune the kit to fix.. But I can understand the current order because I can also understand getting the song set up first and then fiddling with the kit, so it works both ways.
Middle half would be dedicated to the song section/style/fills/drummer on the left, and groove/accent/fill controls on the right as per JS2.
Across the bottom 3rd, I'd put the pattern editor across the whole width, and the bar indicator under that, across the whole width. For some reason, only being able to current see a few bars bugs me - the more song the better - but the current height and size of those squares is fine.
I think a bit more minimalistic in the art style wouldn't necessarily hurt.
Having said that, the Virtual Kit and Mixer looks good!

Is there currently a way to copy just the notes of a single limb from one bar to the next?
The JS3 bar editor has multi-event select so you can highlight the shaker notes with a focus rectangle and then use copy/paste.
Also, any chance of implementing 1) ability to solo/mute specific limbs
Muting exists in JS2. Click on the limb name in the bar editor for that. Soloing a limb is not planned for JS3 at this time.
2) recompose specific limbs and/or drums (like just recompose the hi hat part, with a different variation that's based on the style/settings)
This (should) be available in JS3.

Wow, thanks. Sounds like JS3 will have many improvements other than updated GUI! Not that I ever had any doubts about this, Jamstix is constantly evolving and improving.

We should see at least 2 FULL bars in the bar editor. I also think, like others it should get more space generally.

Why would you need 2 full bars in the BE? It is easy to switch between them with the timeline next to it.

I don't know the limits of VST screen (if there's any) but I think that a view with Timeline on top of BE would be more natural and give the possibility of seeing more than one single bar...
In other words, make the BE full screen width and put the timeline on top of it.
And please, remove the stool in "Kit top view"! (except if we can hit the stool to get free jazz sounds.

Ralph, if I can see two bars, then editing of transitions from on to the other gets much more efficient. And all the guys out there, who are visual ones like me, also need to see more.
From the discussion in the past months I got the impression that the bar editor would be one of the things, which are in focus of JS3 and would get much more space as many users seem to hate the old one. I hope it will be taken care of...

The bar editor has received a lot of attention in JS3, such as:
- more than twice as big
- multi-event selection
- right-click sound change option
- time sigs up to 7/4
One of the reasons we didn't go to two bars is the fact that most people will only edit one bar at a time and most of the time it will be in 4/4. This means they only need 16 columns and all the other columns are wasted space to [i:c5e10cd473]them[/i:c5e10cd473].
The Jamstix 3 GUI was supposed to be not a dramatic change from the JS2 workflow but an improvement upon its concepts. We will present an alternative GUI concept after JS3 is released so we can all discuss it before it is used for JS4.

A kit without a throne is like a guitar without strings

I always had the impression that JS users were people that hate real drummers.
